Liberty and the Leaf

Leaf

You've got to love what Nissan's done with its latest model in the Leaf. An acronym for, Leading, Environmentally friendly, Affordable Family Car, the Leaf launched in December with an EPA measured range of 73 miles per charge. Translation—who's gonna be pumping $4 gas? Leaf owners sure won't.

The Leaf comes in two trims: the SV trim (includes advanced navigation system and smartphone connectivity) and the SL trim. Also tantalizing is the price as the Leaf is available in the U.S. for $32,780 plus a $2,200 garage charger installation, which by the way is eligible for a $1,000 federal tax credit. However, the lack of a gas-powered backup option may have buyers on the fence until we see a bit more confidence in this whole EV infrastructure. But what's not to love in a car that emails you when its battery is low, or synchs up to that classic Van Morrison tune via Pandora that you've got playing on your iPhone as you enter the car. Oh yeah, and it sounds like a spaceship when it drives and actually pings when it backs up. Too cool.
