China Carmakers Are at it Again... They Design a Negative Emissions Vehicle

This car might look like something right off of a ride at Disneyworld, but this organic 2-seater is legit. The YeZ, a take on the Mandarin word for "leaf", was desinged by General Motors' Chinese partner, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC).

Boasting an all-electric drivetrain that draws the bulk of its power from photoelectric converter mounted on its roof, the YeZ is a "negative carbon emissions" vehicle. The solar crystal films that make up this photoelectric system can track the movement of the sun to maximize solar energy collection. Its illuminated power lines deliver the electricity to the battery of the vehicle via streams of light. And, additional electricity is generated by the small windmills on each of the wheels.

Making the car even more environmentally friendly, the body of the YeZ is made of metal-organic framework materials that capture water and carbon dioxide from the surrounding air through adsorption and combines the two through a process of artificial photosynthesis. This process not only generates electricity, but it also creates air conditioning refrigerant and "exhales" oxygen back into the atmosphere, hence the "negative carbon emissions."

Unfortunately, this little guy won't be ready for about 20 years. The YeZ will be at the 2010 Expo in Shanghai, China, however, so you can check it out yourself if you're heading that way.
